Social Media Analysis
Researchers examined social media posts to gain a better understanding of residents of diverse New York City housing communities (Neighborhood Navigator Sites) and how they feel about living in the city, the resources available to them, and how the built environment relates to their quality of life.
Our Analysis
The research team analyzed sentiments expressed by New York City residents. The team reviewed a variety of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Snapchat.
Twitter was the most compelling because users posted a wide variety of topics concerning their well-being, health and community.
We then identified around 10,000 unique users who sent a tweet tagging @NYCHA or @CrimJusticeNYC Twitter handles within a four-year period, and we analyzed publicly available tweets from those users.
We obtained around 12 million text-only tweets and around 500,000 tweets containing both images and text. Using data science methods, we were able to identify public concerns on social media that we hope can be used to identify the needs and concerns of residents.
